picnic wedding

Yay! We're getting married!

wedding details

date: August 9th, 2008

time: 4pm

location: Max's family's place on Martha's Vineyard. The address is 25 Chockers Ln, Chilmark, MA 02535

Martha's Vineyard is a VERY popular vacation spot and books up very very quickly. If you think you can make it to the wedding, we definitely recommend making reservations as early as possible.

It'll be a mostly outdoor event (unless is rains of course), so we recommend bringing a sweater and NOT wearing stiletto heels unless you want to aerate the lawn:) No fancy clothes necessary, just be comfortable.

We're planning on setting up some sort of shuttle service to/from the wedding, so let us know where you'll be staying and if you'll have a rental car. See "transportation" below for more details on this.

Pirate Party on Friday night! Be there or be square! See post at the bottom of this site for details.

travel

You can fly directly into the Martha’s Vineyard airport from Boston, Hyannis, Nantucket, New Bedford, and Providence. If you have the time and want to save some money, it's almost always cheaper to fly into Boston’s Logan Airport, then take a bus to Woods Hole (Peter Pan Busline - www.peterpanbus.com) and catch the ferry (www.steamshipauthority.com). This is surprisingly simple given that the bus leaves right from the airport and drops you off right at the ferry dock. The same bus also stops in Providence, which is where Southwest flies into. If you’re lucky enough to be able to drive to Woods Hole, there's long-term parking with shuttles to the ferry.
There are also passenger ferries from Hyannis, New Bedford, Falmouth, Hyannis and Nantucket (see links below). The Woods Hole ferry is the cheapest and the only one that also carries cars. If you do want to take your car across, you’ll need to make reservations very early. Reservations become available to non-Vineyard residents at the end of January. It's also very expensive, $130 for a round trip last summer. Many people choose to rent a car on Vineyard instead, or get around by public transportation. See “getting around the island” post below for details on those options.

places to stay

Cheapest option by far: Camp on the Ryerson's lawn! It's plenty big enough for lots of tents and Admiral Benbow's Inn is just steps away! There's an outdoor shower and an indoor bathroom as well if Admiral Benbow is too crude for your tastes. Plus there's always the lake to bathe in:) Max and I will be staying in the boathouse, so we'd love to have you close by (though we may try to put you to work chopping vegetables).

Lots more B&Bs are listed on this page:

http://www.sunsol.com/ccvd/lodging/mthvinbb.html
Many of them close down in the winter and won’t take reservations until spring, or at least until January. It's hard to reach anyone in the off-season even to check rates (I tried), but if you leave messages, some of them will call you back. I assume their response times will improve in the spring and summer.

getting around the island

If you don't bring your car across on the ferry, you'll need to figure out some island transportation. The ferry runs alternately to Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs, so if you're staying in either of those towns, you could probably walk or take a taxi to your hotel. Places to eat are also readily available in those towns.

If you are staying at a more out of the way place "up island," you might want to think about renting a car. Hertz is available at the airport, but Budget (www.Budgetmv.com) has locations in Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven as well. All the other rental car companies are local, non-national businesses. A list is available at www.mvy.com/islandinfo/getaroundtaxis.php. When I looked around, I found Budget to be the cheapest, as most of the local places specialize in scooters and jeeps and other fancy rides.

Buses are another way to get around the Vineyard, if you have some patience. You can get most places, but it might take a while. Bus info can be found at www.vineyardtransit.com.

Biking is yet another option, as the island is pretty flat and not that large. Bikes can be brought on the ferry or rented on the Vineyard. The buses all have bike racks as well. A word of warning though, roads are windy and shoulders are narrow to non-existent, so its not for everyone (I think it looks bloody terrifying!).

If you end up planning your trip so that the only reason to rent a car would be actually getting to and from the wedding (it'll be "up island," near Chilmark), let us know. We will be setting up some sort of shuttle to take care of that.

registry

We've set up a registry at www.alternativegiftregistry. Just search by our names and wedding date.
